Antique 19th Century Huge Hand Carved Wood Mortar Bowl with 2 Iron Bands. This wonderful estate find mortar 12 tall & 10-1/2 in diameter, 17 pounds! Was appraised and determined to be American made in the mid-1800s, and likely used for grain. The local craftsman made this from a single piece of wood and decorated it with a high rounded base and concentric rings. The bottom of the foot appears to have been covered with leather which is deteriorating.
It was not usual to repair or reinforce a tool like this. This one has two hand hammered iron bands to repair a crack which has been filled with a dark medium which is brittle.
The interior is well-used (5" deep at the edge and 8" at the deepest). The deepest part is somewhat offset from the center and blackened from use.The exterior has a waxy feel to the wood, but the iron doesnt. The patina is exquisite and commiserate with its age.
